Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman told the Associated Press the deep purple color was picked “to evoke a counterculture flair, a grab for originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking.” She said the hue “reflects the idea of living not inside the box or outside the box but with no box at all.”

(While the AP reported that Pressman didn’t want to talk about politics, it’s worth pointing out that UltraViolet is also the name of a woman’s advocacy group that focuses on reproductive rights, healthcare, economic security, violence, and racial justice.)

“I see this as very much an optimistic color, an empowering color,” she told AP. “We want to find some peace and calm within ourselves. How do we quiet our minds?”

When asked who exactly wears Ultra Violet the best, Pressman’s answer was obvious. Rihanna, of course. Specifically Rihanna with violet lips and purple sunglasses a la these Dior ads:

“When you think of this color she perfectly sums up the originality, the inventiveness, the forward thinking, the non-conformity,” Pressman said.

So just in case you weren’t planning to already, please channel your inner Rihanna in 2018. Oh, and wear lots of purple.
